Butlins Bans Bumping the Bumper Cars

Butlins Bans Bumping the Bumper Cars

Butlins have introduced a ban on bumping into other riders on the dodgems at each of their resorts. Introducing the ride to the UK holiday camps in 1927, Billy Butlin may have been a pioneer of his time as the ride is now a common sight at travelling fairs up and down the country. Due to new health and safety restrictions in place at the holiday camps, riders will now need to drive in a more orderly fashion; avoiding contact with other riders for fear of being banned. Defending the decision the resort director has cited incidents of "broken bones, due to people bumping into each other". There are currently no known plans to introduce this ban elsewhere.

New Rides for Bottons and Pleasure Island

Bottons Pleasure Beach in Skegness has confirmed a new ride for the 2010 season, their first new addition since Rockin’ Roller in 2006. The ride is to be named ‘Remix II’ and speculated to be a 4 arm Tivoli Extreme Orbiter, aimed at the family thrill market.

Wristband pricing will increase for the 2010 season, seeing prices rise from £12 to £13 for an all-day wristband, and £9 for wristbands purchased after 5pm. Once again, the park is holding their annual charity evening, when wristbands are priced at £4 during the evening of June 11th, with all proceeds going to local charities. A special fun night is also being held on September 11th 2010, featuring a fireworks display, a free raffle and free face painting as well as a range of activities. Bottons reopens on weekends only from March 13th 2010, until Easter.

Pleasure Island in Cleethorpes is also promoting a new ride for the 2010 season. The ride is a ghost train, named Blomberg’s Tomb of Terror. The park also sees the addition of an outdoor ice skating rink, and new shows from Tommy Tinkaboo, the African Acrobats and the sea lions. Pleasure Island reopens on April 1st 2010.

Thanks to Stuart Gutteridge and Martyn for the information.

The event will also offer entertainment ranging from clowns, stiltmen and special guest compere from radio Lincs FM.

In related news, Butlins have reported that their bookings over the next season is 10% up compared to last year. An early indication that more people will be holidaying in the UK this year, which hopefully means a similar boost in trade for other local businesses such as Fantasy Island. Plans to Demolish Red BJ's Rejected

At the beginning of this year, there was a planning application submitted to East Lindsey District Council to demolish the defunct BJ's amusement arcade, cafe and bowling alley. The land would then be used to construct a small housing estate consisting of 12 houses. The plans were rejected and it remains to be seen what becomes of the building at the West side of Sea Lane. The BJ's amusement arcade located almost opposite Fantasy Island is unaffected by these plans.

Ingoldmells Pier?

Ingoldmells Pier?

The Ingoldmells sea front could be about to change since plans have been submitted, by Coastal Land Ltd, for a new pier. Don't expect just any old pier to be appearing anytime soon though, as the plans incorporate a number of modern features; including marina and IMAX 3D cinema. The triangular shape has been designed to shield the pier from wind, as well as including a wind turbine, solar panels, a cooling system that utilises sea water and wave power.

Intentions for the pier range from its use as a concert venue to bidding for it to be used as a casino as well as incorporating life guard facilities. Temporary themed attractions, amusements, cafes, bars and retail outlets are also planned to be included in the three tiered design of the complex. Find out more via the Skegness Standard.
